My New Blog Look (+ A Review of Pipdig Templates)

Blog Template for Mobile Devices

Some of you have already noticed the fresh new look of Dans le Lakehouse!  Even though I've been blogging for many years, I've never spent money on my blog design (or even having my own domain for that matter, because I'm intimated by the prospect of actually moving from blogspot.com).  My DIY header and social media buttons just weren't cutting it anymore though, so I took the plunge and purchased an affordable template from pipdig, which I customized a little:

Easy Blog Template

I am so thrilled with how Dans le Lakehouse looks now, so I wanted to give you a tour (if you're reading via email, click over and take a quick peek!)  If you're a fellow blogger looking for a budget-friendly, customizable, and super easy template for your own website, read on for my review of pipdig.

Here's a look back at my old, DIY "design":

To the right you could spot my sad little social media "buttons," made by me.  Honestly, I'm super proud of myself for figuring out how to make them clickable, but I readily admit that they didn't look very chic or polished.

The whole look wasn't horrible, but it looked homemade.  I did, however, love the black headers and the simple, clean(ish) look, because I like my photos and projects to be front and centre.

When I decided to upgrade the look, I wanted to keep the same feel.  I looked at many different template providers, but I liked that pipdig offers something for everyone - for both wordpress and blogger.  At first I was drawn to the "Minim" template because it featured the same black and white scheme I had before, but after I realized that I would be able to customize colours, fonts, and the layout of any template, I chose "Nineteen" instead.

The "Nineteen" blog template looks like a more polished version of what I had cobbled together.  I started fiddling with the look and chose black (again) for the headers because it looks so sharp with my colorful photos:

A Review of Pipdig.com Blog Templates

There are so many little bonuses and fancy touches that come with the template that would have taken me months to figure out how to create on my own.  I especially love how the pages at the top ("about," "diy project gallery," "lakehouse tour," etc) move with you as you scroll down the page:

Nineteen by Pipdig Blog Template

I needed some teal in the design, so when you hover over the social media icons they turn teal - please humor me and try it!  When you hover over the titles of the pages, they turn grey.  Speaking of the social media icons, aren't they cute?

Templates for Blogger Blogs

The Pinterest and Instagram widgets were included in the template and I love how they feature four uniform photos each (so slick), but I still need to make my own Etsy widget.  I also have a search bar, so if you're looking for a particular post or theme, you can find it quickly now!

Blog Template with Pinterest Instagram Widgets

I also updated my favicon (the little icon beside my blog url) to an anchor - my little nod to coastal decor.  I've changed it a few times since updating the blog look because it's hard to make an image that small actually clear!

Because I mostly read blogs on my phone these days, having a sharp look on mobile devices was important to me.  I've noticed that a lot of blogs looks good on a desktop but are a hot mess on mobile devices and I wanted the look to be consistent.  Luckily blogger created a somewhat okayish mobile version that it defaulted to, but now Dans le Lakehouse looks so chic, no matter where you're visiting the lakehouse!  Here's the look on mobile devices (although you can always scroll down and choose "web version," even if you're on your phone or tablet):

The mobile version has a great menu, too:

Installing the pipdig Blogger Template:

If you're a blogger, you probably want to know how easy this template was to install.  It was incredibly easy to install (15 minutes), but I did spend an afternoon fiddling with sizing, colors, my pictures, widgets, etc.  They can install it for you, but I really recommend doing it yourself because then you start to know the nuts and bolts and customizing everything will be easier.  I had a few questions during the process and the pipdig team responded about a day later, which was pretty quick - although I did figure out one of my own problems in that time frame.  My old "link within" widget stopped working in the transition, so the pipdig folks installed a somewhat similar widget (free of charge) that suggests different posts.  Recently my Pinterest widget stopped working so I had to email the support team and was told Google had made some updates, but all I had to do was re-install the widget and it was working perfectly again.  It has been pretty straightforward and there's always support, which I really appreciate.

There is only one thing I miss about the old look: I had added some lines to the code long ago to auto-size all of my photos to the same width, but I lost that code alteration in the process.  They still auto-size with this template, but only if the photo is already a certain width.  I sacrificed a bit of blurriness for the same width before, but this template does not.  It means I have to go back to some old posts and re-size photos manually, but that's okay - every time I dig into the archives, I catch a typo, so I should probably be looking through old posts regularly anyway.  I'll be updating the pages this month and will be sure to give you a tour when they're all ready!

So, What Do You Think?

I'd love to know what you think of the new blog look!  I'd especially love to hear what makes your experience as a reader better and if there's anything I can do to make visiting the lakehouse as fun and easy as possible!

Why I Blog + Warm Fuzzies

Most of my friends outside of blog-land are not really into decorating or DIY.  Hubby & I have only lived in Ottawa a few years and we were just happy to make friends so quickly.  I didn't do a survey and find out if they were crafty first.  Don't get me wrong, we have fabulous, fabulous friends and I feel so lucky to have such wonderful people in my life.  But since I started this blog, it has felt amazing to connect with people who will notice the small tweak to the curtains, laugh about the hilarious new DIY tablecloth and say they want to try my Ikea Expedit Hack.  When a reader tells me they tried my billy button tutorial and it worked, I swear, it's the highlight of my day.

I also appreciate that blogging keeps me accountable.  It pushes me to finish projects, plus it gives me the courage to try new things I'd only been thinking about, because I know I have you all cheering me on, waiting to see the reveal.  You think I'm the slowest DIY'er ever?  Imagine me with no one to report to!  More than that, my readers blog-friends also inspire me: blogging about their own DIY successes or emailing me with interesting questions or wonderful ideas.

I just wanted to take a moment and thank you all for stopping by the townhouse, and chiming in.  I have no visions of grandeur, because I don't think I will have the good fortune to do this professionally (although that would be swell).  I'm just excited to finally know people (other than my Hubs) interested in DIY and budget decorating!  It makes me smile every day.

That's why it tickles me when other, much more talented, bloggers share my projects with their readers.  I get to meet more blog-friends!  So thanks to Cassity, from Remodelaholic and Roeshel, from DIY Showoff, for featuring my DIY play kitchen on their blogs this past week (click here to see the Remodelaholic feature and click here to see the kitchen on the DIY Showoff).

If you missed my original play kitchen reveal, take a look at the post by clicking here.

And, if you saw my DIY play kitchen and said, "Tanya! I don't have time to make a flippin' play kitchen but now I don't want a cheap, plastic one either," I have a cute BIY (buy-it-yourself) option from Costco.  This set is $189.99.  I'm still pretty excited mine was less than $35.00, but this is two pieces and darn, is it cute.

Costco.ca
This is my favorite part - read the highlighted line in the description.  For some reason it makes me chuckle.  I imagine a kid in the background whining, "Mom, Dad, when do I get a turn?"

This is NOT a sponsored post.  I just heart Costco and want this play kitchen as an objet d'art!

P.S. One of the ways I try to thank you all for being such cool friends is by hosting giveaways.  I don't get paid or perked, the bonus is 100% for you!  And you don't need a blogger account - you can just use the comment form and enter your name (but be sure to include your email address or check back to see the winner announced).

I have a giveaway going on right now, so check it out here, and stay tuned because I have three more in the works!

Will I See You in Toronto?!?

I am headed out the door, off to work, but then I’m immediately hitting the snowy trail for a road trip to BlogPodium & the Canadian Design Bloggers Meetup (plus the Interior Design Show, of course).

Packing was a bit excruciating.  As a PhD candidate, 100% of the conferences I typically attend are attended by other academics and, not to be rude, I’ve grown accustomed to being the best-dressed.  Ironing my clothes has been the secret to my success.  But I have a feeling the other bloggers I’ll meet this weekend will be fancier than me.  You’ve seen my closet - you know I don’t have a lot of clothing (I don't even own a dresser).  Plus, I work from home most days so my closet is chock full of yoga pants and cozy hoodies.  This is my uniform:

Yes, Uggs are Ugly but SO warm.

But I struggled through and picked some outfits – you’ll see photos soon enough!  I even fixed my DIY-destroyed manicure.

If you’re heading to the IDS or BlogPodium or Canadian Design Bloggers Meetup, please come and say “hi” to me!  These are my first blogging events and I will know no one from the real world, while other bloggers might already have bosom blog buddies.  Here’s me:

Well, I’m off!  I found some old CDs for my road trip, so if you hear this song blasting from a black Nissan Versa, that’s me (apologies for cutting you off):

What You Like About My Blog

Big sigh of relief.  I participated in Heather's Blog Hop, "What I Like About Your Blog" and it was a fantastic experience to receive both positive and constructively critical (anonymous) comments.  It looks like 100 bloggers participated so I guess many of us are looking for feedback.  I have to say I was really nervous that the fellow bloggers reviewing my blog would suggest implementing some crazy coding I know nothing about or say to axe something I love.  Curious about the comments I received?

Here are the two sets of comments, cut & paste verbatim, that I received from two fellow bloggers:

Blogger A:

I liked the crisp, modern feel to the blog. The background was plain, and without music. This is a good thing. The photos are clear and crisp as well, almost graphic. The writing is very focused - all about the townhouse, with little extraneous information. Clear, well-written sentences and paragraphs were a pleasure to read. Her tutorials are to-the-point and easy to follow. The style of writing was casual, as if talking with a friend, and accessible. There is a good selection of DIY tips combined with aesthetic inspiration. It's easy to tell that she knows her design style and is true to it.
The only thing that jarred me was the repetition of "I don't celebrate Christmas" 6 times between November 21, 2011 and January 4, 2012. Each mention had a link back to a single post, which didn't say why she doesn't celebrate Christmas, just a further "I don't ..." Whether or not someone celebrates anything is by personal choice and should not have to be explained. However, with the number of times it was said, I left the blog wondering more about that one little thing than admiring her spunk and creativity. Perhaps an evaluation of another sequence of posts would have left a stronger impression of her design aesthetic.
My Two Cents:

A great review, whew.  This blogger was curious about my reason for not celebrating Christmas.  I felt it appropriate to mention whenever I blogged about something "Un-Christmassy" at a time of year most bloggers were making ornaments and gift-shopping.  Although I didn't state my reason in the original linked-to post (I try not to use this blog as a political soap box because I want it to be a place to chat about decorating and DIY) I happily gave my reason after a reader asked in the comments.  So my reason can be found there.  I linked in case folks were curious and it seems they are!  I am slowly learning that people really like more personal posts, like when I answer questions for a blog award or am just being silly (like this post about why I'm a bad wife).  This makes sense, to me, because I prefer to read blogs that share personal snippets.  So if you want to read slightly more personal details in the future, you got it!

Blogger B:

What I Liked:
  • The blog loaded very quickly
  • Simple, clean, soothing design
  • Easy to navigate
  • Nice photography
Great posts. I like how your blog design really reflects your home design.
A Couple of Suggestions:
You have such great photography. I'd consider making the photos in your header larger.
Perhaps move your "archives" gadget up higher on the sidebar. Right now, one has to scroll down pretty far to find it.
Very nice blog!

My Two Cents:

Thanks for this feedback.  I only recently gave the blog a mini-makeover just before my first blogiversary.  I did aim for a simple blog design that was easy on the eyes and I'm glad it's a hit!  I'm still learning how to take a good photo so I'm glad my photography is also a hit.  Thanks for the (simple) suggestions!

If you're reading, a HUGE thanks to both bloggers for your kind and constructive comments.  I really appreciate that you took the time to check out my blog and send such thoughtful suggestions.  Also, thanks to Heather for arranging this blog hop.  What a mountain of work that must have been.

Who else participated?  Have you blogged about the feedback?  Do you have any other comments/suggestions about my blog?  Feel free to use the "anonymous" option for leaving comments.  I am now on a feedback high & looking for more, especially the constructive criticism which I learned is even more intriguing than the positive comments . . .

Rambling Renovators' Great Reads

Wow, what a huge honour!  Jennifer, over at Rambling Renovators, hosts a fabulous annual blog party, featuring her favorite blogs, called Great Reads.  She asks her favorite bloggers to briefly describe their blogs then pick a favorite post and I was invited to partake this year!!!  There aren't enough exclamation marks to accurately capture how flattered I am by the invitation.

Head on over to Rambling Renovators to check out today's list of Great Reads but be sure to check out Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3, and Vol. 4, too!

P.S. As you know from my previous late night post (created from a Jeep parked outside a motel with unsecured wireless), the historic home I'm vacationing in is internet-less.  Well, it was until we figured out we can access another unsecured network from the walk-in closet off the master bedroom.  Mwahaha.  But my laptop is uncooperative (it seems to have a strong ethical code when it comes to stolen internet) so I snagged Hubby's.  When I took a look at my blog in Mozilla Firefox (his preference) I learned that Firefox makes the photos line up weird.  So if you want to see my blog looking it's best, check it out using Internet Explorer.

Four Doses of Exciting News!

First and foremost: Barbara, from the fabulous hodge:podge, interviewed me for her So Canadian Eh? series!!  Re-reading my responses, I sound like such a nerd but I want you to check it out anyway.  I am so flattered by the kind things Barbara said about me.  Thanks for having me on your blog, Barbara!

Second bit of juicy news: my Artful Ikea Expedit Hack (with my DIY'd paintings) was featured on Ikea Hackers!  I'm so excited to see what Ikea Hacker readers have to say.

Next tidbit: thanks to an invite from Beatrice, of The Crafty Bee, I'm now on Pinterest (click on the Pinterest logo to the right).  I got an email reply telling me I am officially the last person in the world.  I'm slowly starting to follow my favorite bloggers, but speed up the process for me: are you on Pinterest?  Will someone please follow me - I look like such a sad sack with 0 followers - it's the early days of blogging all over again!!

I hope this isn't true:

Hmmm, I'm new at this but I know this one's pretty spot-on:

Source

I even created a Twitter account, just to be on Pinterest!  I don't know if I'll really get into Twitter (I don't get it) but I have an account now - I'm townhouse_tanya (and, like Pinterest, zip friends!)

That's my news!  How was your weekend?

For Dans le Townhouse readers, Design*Sponge featured my Artful Ikea Expedit Hack (click here to see the feature)!  Fun, right?  The last time Design*Sponge featured a project, it was my beloved Felted Wool Billy Buttons (click here for the tutorial).

Thanks to everyone for the fabulous comments on my Ikea Hack.  I'm planning a detailed post on the artwork I created, so stay tuned.

Today is a boring day in the townhouse.  In preparation for setting up Hubby's desk, I'm finally filling holes in the baseboard we installed almost two years ago (well, at least the space behind his desk)!  Is there a biggest procrastinator blog award?!?

Blogiversary + Giveaway!

On November 16, 2010 I started this blog, something I had wanted to do but hadn't, for fear of rejection.  Fast forward one year and my DIY projects have been featured on Design*Sponge, Apartment Therapy and even in Living Etc. magazine!  The townhouse has been featured on fabulous blogs like Better After, Curbly and Made by Girl (and many others).  Yay!  Not being rejected feels good.

But the best part of blogging has been the chance to connect with people from all over the world to chat about decorating, renovating and DIY.  I live for readers comments and emails!

To celebrate one year of blogging (and to thank you all for following along), I'm hosting my first-ever giveaway!!  With Christmas around the corner, I thought one of my handmade, one-of-a-kind Christmas spiders might be a nice way to thank my blog friends, old & new.

I make and sell these spider Christmas tree ornaments and every year they sell like hotcakes (I even made them as wedding favors for our winter wedding!)  Here's the legend that accompanies them:

Why Every Christmas Tree Needs a Spider:

A long time ago in Germany, a mother was busily cleaning for Christmas. The spiders fled to the attic to escape the broom. When the house became quiet the spiders slowly crept downstairs for a peek.

Oh what a beautiful Christmas tree!

In their excitement they scurried up the trunk and out along each branch. They were filled with happiness as they climbed all over the glittering tree.  As they climbed, the tree became completely shrouded in their dusty grey spider webs.

When St. Nicholas came with the gifts for the children and saw the tree covered with spider webs, he smiled because saw how happy the spiders were, but he knew how heartbroken the mother would be if she saw the tree covered with the dusty webs.

So he turned the webs to silver and gold. The tree sparkled and shimmered and was even more beautiful than before.

That's why we have tinsel on our tree and every tree should have a Christmas spider in it's branches!

~Author Unknown (and the story varies - sometimes Santa Claus is the leading man)

HOW TO WIN:

This giveaway is now closed.

Simple.
  1. Follow me!  (you'll find Google connect at the bottom of the blog, or add dans-le-townhouse.blogspot.com to "Blogs I'm Following" in your blogger account).
  2. Then just leave me a comment to tell me you're following along (even if you've been following all year!)
I will use a fancy-pants random generator to select a winner Sunday, so check back Monday!  I'll chat with the winner about favorite colours and custom make a spider to suit his/her holiday decor.

Good luck and thanks for a wonderful year!

Some Blog Love + More About Me

HUGE thanks to Shannon, from 8foot6, for passing on some blog lovin' and sending a Versatile Blogger award my way.  But, in actuality, I am a bad blogger and received a Versatile Blogger award in August from My Beautiful Life but I didn't blog about it!  But I'm following through now and am hugely appreciative that anyone reads my blog, let alone deems it award-worthy.

As per the rules, 7 things about me:

1.  You know I love silhouettes, is it any surprise I love cameos, too?  This is my most recent purchase, from an antique show that came to town.

2.  My McCoy collection is growing but not in my favorite colour, turquoise.  Maybe if I meandered online I'd find more, but I like to buy in person (preferably when traveling) so each piece is special.  I'm a softie.

3.  I am not a fan of my giant knees.  I refer to them as my "skull-crushing knees" (or skull-crushers, for short) because they are just. so. large.  Mostly filled with bone, too.  And this skull-crushing-knee gene is a dominant trait, with my dad, aunt, grandfather and cousin all sporting them.

4.  I'll have to keep this interesting,so you stop staring at my knees.  Something shiny will do the trick.  I love my wedding band (Hubby & I picked it out together), but I can't stop staring at uncut diamond rings.

Something Shiny Moved
Uncut diamond ring.  Oooo. Sparkly.  Whose thinking about knees now?

My wedding band.

5.  I have re-read this collection of essays dozens of times.  As a voluntarily child-free woman, Nobody's Mother: Life Without Kids is one of my favorite books.

6.  I need more time.  I just never have enough.  I don't mean that I miss deadlines - I am super on the ball about that.  I mean that there are so many things I want to do, try, taste, see, accomplish and I worry that I will never fit all of my goals into one lifetime.

I'm still hooked on posterize, but have been customizing it.

7.  I'm working on my first-ever Ikea Hack.  Stay tuned, but here's a hint:

Ikea

Now to pass on the fun.  I'd love to learn more about the bloggers behind these versatile blogs, that I check in on most every day:

P.S. For more tidbits about me, check out this, this and this post from previous blogger awards.

I'm Blogging at Fresh Home!

Today, like all days, I'm thankful for so many things.  But, as a Canadian, today I am reminded to be especially thankful.  I am thankful that:
  • I found a loving, caring and supportive husband at such a young age.  Yay!
  • I am privileged enough to be able to follow my educational aspirations.
  • Together, my husband & I could purchase a house and make it a home.
  • My family is (mostly) healthy and (mostly) happy.
  • I am thankful for each experience, many documented on my charm bracelet, that I have been lucky enough to enjoy.

I am also thankful that I can pursue so many of my whims.  From making felted wool billy buttons to painting our useless table (and many other DIY projects) I've had the (albeit sometimes limited) means, time and support to pursue these projects and this is not something I can take for granted.

On a lighter note, I am also thankful that people read my blog!  Although it is purely a hobby, it brings me joy to share my projects and sources of inspiration.  Which is why I am especially excited that I will be blogging over at Fresh Home Blog, once a month, as one of their Fresh Faces!  You might remember I was in the magazine, too!  Click on over to read today's post (it will be familiar to some readers).

To any new readers: Welcome!  So happy you stopped by.  Please tour around the blog.  I invite you to check out the Townhouse Tour,  DIY Projects page and "About Moi," if you'd like to learn more.

    Happy Thanksgiving!!

    Re-Vamped Townhouse Tour

I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing weekend.

After a month away and a week spent half-heartedly putting the house in order (it was difficult getting used to cleaning again!), the townhouse was finally restored to its tidy glory this weekend.   Not that my husband didn't clean while I was in Hungary. Its just that I run a tighter ship and the spiders & dust bunnies definitely noted my absence. I think I removed two dozen cobwebs this past week, from very bold places too.  Like between the teak chair and footstool in the living room.  That's cheeky.

Because I mixed in a bit of decorating with my cleaning/unpacking/back-to-school de-cluttering I thought it was time to post an updated House Tour page, complete with snazzy new photos.  Scroll down for a sneak peak, but take a look at the full house tour here and tell me what you think.
