- 1 cup olive oil (substituted for the almond oil recommended; the recipe says olive is okay too)
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 liquid hand soap
- 1 tbsp vanilla (which I doubled)
First, my honey bear chillaxed a little in a hot tub of its own (I warmed a pot of water to help soften my crystallized honey - it works! And stays soft again for a long time):
When the honey was soft, I poured the water out of the pot and mixed the ingredients over really low heat, for a couple seconds. I only stirred it in the warmed pot to ensure my honey really was liquid again.
After it cooled, I decanted a small amount into a washed out eye makeup remover bottle and slapped on a half-hearted label (I'm sick, I'm too tired to make nice labels, but I wanted to make sure I didn't accidentally rub this into my eyes).
The Verdict?
I almost died. I put a cap's worth into a super full tub (remember, mine's extra deep), which I thought was a modest amount. It made the tub so slick I almost mugged out. Getting out of the tub, I must have looked like a newborn fawn my legs were so unsteady! Plus, it was so oily I felt like I was marinating. I needed a follow up shower. And a nap from all the effort. I tried another bath with half the amount and while it wasn't as oily, it wasn't that special either because all of the yumminess was seriously diluted. The sweet almond oil must make all the difference!
Although I get an A+ for effort, for DIYing with a nasty virus, I think this classifies as a DIY fail (it's not my first, and won't be my last!).
i did something similar! i tried to make a body scrub w/ olive oil and sugar, and i seriously almost died trying to get out of the tub. i relate to the newborn fawn feeling :) def A for effort, and i'd love to know if a different kind of oil does the trick.
ReplyDeleteIt's weirdly comforting that I'm not alone in this DIY bomb that made me feel super inelegant, to say the least! Maybe the olive oil is just too rich?
DeleteYou are a brave soul to try it.
ReplyDeleteI would be scared to death I would have an allergic reaction.
I can't use liquid handsoap or I break out in hives...I could just see me sitting in a tub of it, lol
A+ for trying for sure!!!
My friend and I years ago tried a diy salt scrub o my god it smelled so horrible...it really takes a scientist to make it all smell good and pretty.
Guess that is why women pay so much for beauty products. I will let the pro's do it, ;)
Amy
Yup, sometimes you just gotta leave it to the pros!! I was desperate (and curious!), but happy I tried it. Now I know ;)
DeleteThat's terrible you're allergic to hand soap! Even organic ones?
Hope you start feeling better soon. I'm glad you didn't get hurt trying to get out of the oily tub, but you'll probably laugh at the visual your description created...eventually. We all got so exhausted from moving that now we're sick too.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dana! Oh gosh, I'm already laughing at my mishap! I'm sad to hear you're all sick too - that's terrible! I hope you're feeling better soon :D
DeleteMy friend had a similar fail from a mask I pinned on Pinterest. She said it was an ok mask, but it wasn't an "all over Biore strip" as promised. Oh well! We try... that's the only way to succeed!!
ReplyDeleteSo true!! Being fearless has led to some amazing DIY projects too :)
Deletehmmm i bet you are right that olive oil probably made it extra slippery. i just usually stick with the bath bombs from lush...but maybe someitme i will try to make an at home bubble bath or scrub, they always look yummy!
ReplyDeleteThe DIY ones always look tempting!! But maybe I'll try something from lush . . .
