I don't know about you, but I grow weary of the repeated suggestion in design magazines, books and blogs to take a stack of books, plop on a glass or vase and call it a table:
I loathe to be a hater, but I really like my books on a shelf or on a table. Off the floor, in general. Granted, the ones below are kinda cool, but they are tables made out of books, not a stack of books
acting as a table. But maybe I'm just crabby today. I'm nearing the end of my timeline for my comprehensive exams and I'm just sick of books in general. Can I just order my PhD online? Does etsy sell them?
That might break the seal. What are your thoughts on books as tables? Have you done this with fantastic results?

here), but I just love how
Alanna Cavanagh styled hers. Do you have an awesomely styled bookcase that could draw me out of today's funk?
I'm not a fan of cutesy. Repurposing a piece of furniture occasionally appeals to me. But using something that was never furniture to begin with has CUTESY written all over it to me. I was a literature teacher and a librarian. Books are to be read, so I find the "book tables" particularly irksome. On the other hand, beautifully staged bookshelves and built-ins are a passion of mine!

ReplyDeleteThat's fair, Ashly. Thanks for your comment! I've been thinking more about what bugs me about this and I think, because I use my books so often, it is horribly impractical for me. I'd have to use books I hate and would never reference-which seems even sillier. I just imagine a lot of toppled piles . . .

ReplyDeleteI like my books in bookshelves too. The random stacks look unkempt, pretentious (as if you're reading SO many books at the moment that you don't have time to keep them on the shelf), and precariously unstable as a table surface. Plus, it's NOT a table. You can't move it as a single unit.

i agree with you! i have two very large dogs. not only would that stack fall over, it would then be chewed on.
