12 Ways to Clean a Teeny, Tiny Troublesome Vase

I was on the hunt for a teeny tiny vase and recently thrifted one (that's made in England)!  Hubby hates thrift stores but he was with me when I found it, reinforcing my belief that he is my lucky charm and must accompany me on all thrifting adventures.  Hear that?  That's Hubby sobbing quietly in the background.

The vase was a little bit dirty inside and when I brought it home I realized my bottle brush didn't fit.  I really need a set of these Lee Valley brushes.  I tried soaking the vase in soapy water but no dice.  No worries, I had a plan.

I poured in a few drops of undiluted dish soap and let it sit overnight.  Then I taped a Q-tip to a wood skewer and scrubbed gently.  (You can also buy extra long cotton swabs).  All the gunk and dirt came off with just a little coaxing.  I rinsed out the vase and, voila, a new home for my . . . drumroll please . . . first ever real billy button.

You know how much I loved my felted wool version, but now I have the real deal.  In Budapest we got into the habit of buying fresh flowers from older women selling them at subway stations.  This was the only billy button of all the bunches, so I saved it and smuggled it home.

Here are eleven other tricks for cleaning narrow, uncooperative vases:

Most tricks I read about depend on either using some kind of acidic solution or something abrasive, sometimes a combination of both.
  1. Pour in baking soda, salt and vinegar, swish gently and then rinse thoroughly
  2. Use crushed eggshells and dish soap and shake gently
  3. Pour in fine sand and shake gently, rinsing with vinegar or hot water
  4. Add uncooked rice and fill with soapy water, shake gently
  5. Use a combination of popcorn kernels and vinegar, swirl around and rinse
  6. Chop up ice cubes and add, along with salt, shake mixture and rinse (you can also add some lemon juice)
  7. Toss in broken up pieces of a denture cleaning tablet, allow to sit overnight and rinse
  8. Use toilet cleaning solution (it's tough on grime I hear)
  9. Squeeze in some salt, cotton balls and rubbing alcohol and shake vigorously - the cotton balls will help wipe up what the salt loosens and will slide out easily when wet
  10. Use the end of a chop stick, with piece of paper towel or a cloth secured with a rubber band, to gently scrub the the stains
  11. Make a bottle brush with a few pipe cleaners twisted together
Here's a tip to keep a vase from building sediment: pour in some vegetable oil, swish it around and then pour it out.  That residue, I'm told, will keep your next bunch of flowers from staining the vase.

Do you do any of these tricks or have one of your own?

Vase Craze

I am still abroad, but am so back logged with photos of of purchases, DIY goodies and funny stories that my post will be un-travel-related for a few more days.  As a bonus, I am a bit homesick and blogging about home-y thing is making me smile.

While still in Canada, I went completely nuts for vases (see here & here).  Odd because I rarely fork over the clams for fresh cut flowers.  I guess I need to make more Billy Buttons.

I purchased this turquoise piece at a brand-spanking-new antique store that opened up in my hometown.  It was only $12!  It is marked "Staffa F" but, like most markings, it is lost on me.  I just love the colour and the beehive shape.  Sadly, it looked naked all by its lonesome . . .

This vintage 50s kitchen still remains in the top floor of my
childhood home.  My great-grandfather built the house and it used to house three families!

I rarely buy home accessories at Winner's or Homesense but I found a tall white vase (handmade in Sri Lanka) that has a splash of colourful glaze at the top and it looks perfect with my new vintage piece.  Check it out (living temporarily) on my mom's expedit unit (expedit love!).  I think the difference in height makes these two pieces the perfect friends.

I have been so absent from my favorite blogs, so tell me about your most recent find!

Treasure Hunting Report

Maybe you have noticed my blogging has been a bit scaled back.  I have been posting, like a good little blogger.  I just haven't been visiting my favorite blogs as much as I'd like.  I mentioned Monday I would be delivering The Lamps to my mom and I did!  So I have been a bit distracted.  Time always flies for me, but when I spend time with loved ones the days pass unbelievable quickly.  It is FRIDAY already.  Does anyone else agree that time needs to move more slowly?!?

I am super excited to go yard saling tomorrow because I am in a different city.  Treasure Hunting has been slow going in my city - I keep finding things I definitely do not need.  I thought before I hit the yard sales this weekend, I should show you last weekend's find: a bright turquoise vase, with a luminescent white interior.  I am finding a lot of vases this year . . . like this one.

Have a good weekend!!

P.S. I usually use a pretty good Panasonic DMC-FZ28 camera with a lot (too much!) creative control for blogging, but I recently picked up a cheap point & shoot to have something small to toss in a purse.  Gosh, so much harder to a take a good pic.  The photos above were taken with the point and shoot . . .

Gorgeous Anthropologie Vase

Any blogger users know that blogger was down for awhile.  As a result, many of  the lovely comments you left (and this post) were deleted.  BAH!  I'm re-posting this and will follow-up with a brand new post soon.

While checking out shops in Houston, I found the high style big box central, Highland Village.  Among the trendy home stores like West Elm and Restoration Hardware there is, no suprise, an Anthropologie.  Honestly, I haven't been blown away by Anthropologie in the past.  Sometimes the look cultivated in the stores and online looks too forced.  Is that harsh?  Well, previous opinions aside, I fell in with love this Curvy Chrysanthemum Vase online:

Aqua plus a red sculptural flower?  Yes please.  I'm going to give Anthropologie another try tomorrow afternoon.  For the air conditioning, if nothing else.  Then I'm off in search of local shops and galleries!!
