Bathroom Zing

Handy Hubby and I must not know our city very well (even after three years) because, after approaching my favorite Value Village from an unfamiliar direction, I begged Hubby to stop at this "new" location. It wasn't until we were almost at the door that I realized my mistake. Hmmmm . . . a little embarrassing. The bright side: new or not, I found this great yellow and white glass bowl for $1.99!

Hubby insists it looks like an ashtray, but I am enamoured with how perfectly it pairs with the yellow abstract I painted. Only once I settled on a yellow and grey bathroom scheme did I realize how hard it is to find zingy yellow accessories, so I am especially excited about this thrifty find.

I'm liking the added splash of citrus to the bathroom because it ties in the bright colours from the rest of the townhouse. Right outside the bathroom (impossible to photograph because the tripod won't fit in the narrow hall) are my needle felted wool abstracts.

Does anyone else fiddle with their accessories around as much as I do? I am forever shuffling around the "smalls," because they are such a cheap and easy way to spruce things up.

New DIY Art For Bathroom

Inspired by the yellow & grey rooms I have been ogling (see here for bathrooms and here for other rooms), I painted some artwork for the main bathroom this weekend! I LOVE our bathroom (if you check out the before, here, you will see why) but it needed some colour. The rest of the townhouse has so many colourful pops of artwork - even the guest half bathroom has a new DIY painting - that this bathroom looked out of place. After a botched attempt (that I promise to blog about soon) I created a piece that Hubby I think looks great:

I love that you can see it so clearly in the mirror. It adds a visible splash of colour, regardless of your vantage point.

Even in our windowless bathroom, with the lights turned off, the yellow painting adds a spark of brightness.

I painted the edges of the canvas the same shade of yellow featured prominently in the painting for a seamless look. Less expensive than framing, painting the edges offers a more finished look.

Grey + Yellow Bathroom Inspiration

With one (formerly) stalled bathroom decorated, I have decided to tackle the main bath. Not much is needed at this point. Just some more COLOUR (maybe in the form of artwork?) because with all the grey, it looks so disjointed from the rest of the townhouse.

Needs more colour . . .

I searched for inspirational photos this weekend and rustled up some fantastic, but perhaps too austere, results - like the lovely bathroom below. Love the charcoal grey wall and crisp painting, but it just won't fit with the rest of the townhouse:

Then I saw this bathroom. I really don't get the dress in the bathroom (or the radio - isn't that a bathtub no-no?), but the colour palette and mix of patinas gives me goosebumps.

I am also really intrigued by the idea of almost neon yellow artwork with a neutral palette like mine. The bedding in the photo below really reminds me of the tones in our bathroom flooring.

I think I might actually implement the grey & yellow scheme I have been mooning over.

Inspiration: Yellow & Grey Rooms

This is the story of how I (sometimes) come to like the things I like: my mom starts to like it. At first, I'm ambivalent. Then I start to see how the thing (colour palette, furniture item, etc.) works for her. Then I keep my eye out for it, for her. I endure it. Then I snag a couple pieces for either of us. Then I start to like it, slightly. Then I become obsessed and barely remember not liking it. This has happened with:

Mid-century design
Teak (the oiling, the denting - I wasn't always a fan)
Natural fibres for clothing (I was into polyester, at first - wash & wear, baby)
Cashmere (now I can't wear my old - itchy - wool sweaters)
White walls (I once painted mine kermit green!)
The eyeliner flick
The monkey song

And now, with the stellar combination of yellow and grey. I know, I know, it has been done to death but, thanks to mom, I'm hooked. Just look at how many inspiration pics I've amassed:
