Well, for those who heart the Expedit, I have a treat for you: a roundup of my favorite hacks! And don't forget, if you have an Expedit you love (or have tried an Expedit hack) send me some pics for my next ode to the Expedit. Email: dans.le.townhouse@gmail.com.
The most glamorous of all Expedit hacks, mirror added behind the bookcase makes it look surprisingly upscale.

An elegant hack makes this Expedit look much more ordered and tidy. Plus - get this - there's a flip down surface. What an ingenious, space saving idea.

It's only a little tweak, but adding legs to an Expedit makes it seem much less bulky. I am also madly in love with the turquoise bird cage. I want a turquoise bird cage as an objet d'art.

These DIY'd doors, covered with a blown up photo, are completely mesmerizing. This project looks like it was so much work, but so worth it!

This Ikea Expedit hack, with it's DIY'd hinged doors made from plywood and MDF, looks very Parisian chic. Even though I love me some colour, the pared down colour palette of whites, black and earthy wood tones is so crisp and refreshing.

Would an Expedit hack round-up be complete without my hack? I still love my swinging paintings and haven't even tired of the abstracts . . . yet.

I found out about Mykea from a blog called Jeremyriad. Apparently, the new-to-me company can help customize your Ikea, so you could do a text-y version like this (you know I love text too). But I think some lettered stencils and either DIY'd or store bought bins/doors would create an equally cool look.

New shop-on-the-block Panyl offers colourful ways to customize any Ikea, and it works for Expedit too. I haven't tried this product but it seems pretty simple.

Aha, the mirror! What a great idea. I have the 2x2 version in our guest room, and I love this idea.
ReplyDeleteIt makes the Expedit look so pretty. I'd love to see photos if you try it! It should be much easier with a smaller version. I see mirrors for free all the time in the classifieds (the plain, bathroom kind). Maybe you will have some luck!
DeleteOoh! I love the idea of adding legs! I have been thinking of adding a little Expedit to Greta's room for toy storage, but because her room is pretty small, I have been hesitating. This is a great way to keep it visually less heavy, like you said. Great round up, Tanya!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Julia. I'm glad to help! A little Expedit would be so cute, especially because Ikea has Expedit-sized bins, perfect for just chucking toys into. A great way to get her in on the tidying action :)
Deletelol. i spent an hour and a half the other day going through the IkeaHackers Expedit tags to see kitchen islands made of them because i'm thinking i might do that. but i really do love the ones with the wooden doors, especially the one that flips over.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!! I'd love to see the Expedit-island, if you go for it.
DeleteDefinitely love the Expedit! And it looks great customized!
ReplyDeleteI find the flip down table idea so brilliant and I love-love the blown photo one!
ReplyDeletewow...these are so great. totally love the first image with mirrors!
ReplyDeleteI love the turquoise doors and drawers!
ReplyDeleteThey are fun! Actually, the company contacted me yesterday and offered to host a giveaway, so you'll have a chance to win some Panyl products soon.
DeleteGreat examples! I love the mirrors in the back! So stealing that!
ReplyDeleteIf you do not want to tackle a large mirror, you can attach thin plywood to the back of your shelf then just use a heavy adhesive to glue 12"x12" mirror panels into the shelves! You can purchase beautiful mirror panels fairly inexpensive at your local craft stores!
